Anchors Away Marina expands to meet high demand for winter boat storage

What is it: Anchors Away Marina has expanded with a new 12,000-square-foot storage building. The business marked the occasion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 18, with its annual haul-out party the following day at the Crow’s Nest, which is also on the property.

The new building can fit between 35 and 40 boats and is already completely full for the winter. That has management considering even more storage buildings to a marina that already has more than 200 slips and four buildings.

“They take reservations for storage all summer long and, when they realize they have a full building, they put another one up,” says Connie Roberts, marketing director for Anchors Away Marina.

The Crow’s Nest and Crabby Joe’s restaurants are located on the property, while fuel, launch services and boat detailing are also available.

“We’re always doing winter storage services, winterizations and whatever else you want to do there,” Roberts says. “We do all sorts of good things.”

One of those good things that is offered is the Women on Water classes, a boating how-to and safety course, taught by general manager Jeff Wilson and Roberts.

“What we do is we give women an hour of classroom instruction and then take them out on a boat,” Roberts says. “We teach them how to dock a boat and drive a boat. We did it last summer and again this past summer. We had a good group of women.”

More than just storage: The Anchors Away Marina service department offers winterization of the boats it stores, doing all the little things needed to make the boat seaworthy when it launches next spring.

The staff is also working through the certification process to be able to service Mercury engines.

“You have to be certificated to be a Mercury dealer or to work on the engines,” Roberts says. “That’s why we are gearing up our service department, trying to broaden the services of our department.”

How to get involved: Anchors Away Marina is located at 5925 Saylor St., Lakeside, near East Harbor State Park.

Boaters can get more information on the services offered at Anchors Away Marina by calling (419) 734-1395 or by email at [email protected]. The marina also has a Facebook page and a website at anchorsawaycorp.com.
